Colin Richards, 48, from the Grangetown area of the city, was found unconscious in the Heol-Y-Berllan area on 7 April last year.

Mr Richards died from a stab wound to his thigh, despite the efforts of the emergency services.

Corey Gauci, 19, denied murder and violent disorder but was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday.

The jury also delivered its verdicts on a number of other defendants after a six-week trial.

James O’Driscoll, 27, was found guilty of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article; Noreen O’Driscoll, 28, was found guilty of assisting an offender; Rebecca Ross, 44, was found guilty of assisting an offender and possession of a bladed article; and Sonya Somersall, 44, was found guilty of assisting an offender.

Christian Morgan, 36, was also found guilty of possession of a bladed article but the jury failed to reach a verdict on a separate charge of violent disorder.

Cardiff Crown Court heard how the violence on 7 April had escalated from a disagreement between Christian Morgan, a friend of Colin Richards, and the other defendants.

Morgan had received threatening messages from his ex-girlfriend Noreen O’Driscoll, sister of James O’Driscoll, which culminated in the defendants being in the Heol-Y-Berllan area on the night Mr Richards was fatally injured.

In a tribute released after his death, Mr Richards’s family said their loss was “deep” but that “the power of love and friendship will always stay alive”.

“He will always be in our minds and forever in our hearts,” they added.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Davies from South Wales Police said Mr Richards was a “much-loved father, grandfather, son, and brother”.

“His tragic death has left seven children without a father, and they continue to miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with Colin’s today family as they have been throughout,” he added.

“We would like to thank all the witnesses who assisted the investigation, as well as the prosecution team.”

The defendants are due to be sentenced on 23 May.
