At least 20 people have been killed in an incident in Khan Younis, according to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israel and US-backed organisation.

At least 20 people have been killed in an incident in Khan Younis, according to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israel and US-backed organisation.

In a statement, it said 19 people were trampled and one was stabbed in a surge “driven by agitators in the crowd”.

“We have credible reason to believe that elements within the crowd – armed and affiliated with Hamas – deliberately fomented the unrest,” it said.

“For the first time since operations began, GHF personnel identified multiple firearms in the crowd, one of which was confiscated. An American worker was also threatened with a firearm by a member of the crowd during the incident.”

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claimed 21 Palestinians were killed, “including 15 who died of suffocation as a result of tear gas fired at the starving people and the subsequent stampede” at the GHF site.

The statement is unusual for the GHF, as the controversial group, which has been rejected by the United Nations and other aid groups, rarely acknowledges trouble at its distribution sites.

The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, after Israel eased its 11-week blockade of aid into the coastal territory.

Can BBC learn from Gaza documentary controversy?

BBC breached editorial guidelines over Gaza documentary narrated by son of Hamas official

Children collecting water killed in strike, Gaza officials report – as IDF says it ‘missed intended target’

It has four distribution centres, three of which are in the southern Gaza Strip. The sites, kept off-limits to independent media, are guarded by private security contractors and located in zones where the Israeli military operates.

Palestinian witnesses say Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire towards crowds of people going to receive aid.

The Israeli military says it has fired warning shots at people who have behaved in what it says is a suspicious manner. It says its forces operate near the aid sites to stop supplies from falling into the hands of militants.

After the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians trying to reach the aid hubs, the UN has called the GHF’s aid model “inherently unsafe” and a violation of humanitarian impartiality standards.

In response, a GHF spokesperson said: “The fact is the most deadly attacks on aid sites have been linked to UN convoys.”

The GHF says it has delivered more than 70 million meals to Gazans in five weeks and claims other humanitarian groups – which refuse to work with the GHF – had “nearly all of their aid looted” by Hamas or criminal gangs.

Since the GHF sites began operating, more than 875 people have been killed while receiving aid, both at GHF distribution points or elsewhere, according to the UN human rights office and the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

At least 674 of those being killed in the vicinity of aid distribution sites run by GHF.

This week, Yalda and Richard discuss Donald Trump’s big decision to send weapons to Ukraine through NATO. Why has he changed his mind?

Yalda gives her take on the situation and why she thinks Trump is following a similar position to presidents before him when it comes to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The two also discuss the UK’s secret Afghan immigration scheme after a massive data leak and gagged media. But how serious is this for those people still stuck in Afghanistan trying to flee the Taliban?

The defence secretary has told Sky News he is "deeply uncomfortable" with the government using a super-injunction to keep a massive data breach hidden.

The defence secretary has told Sky News he is “deeply uncomfortable” with the government using a super-injunction to keep a massive data breach hidden.

Almost 7,000 Afghan nationals are being relocated to the UK as a result of the breach by the British military, with the personal information of close to 20,000 individuals who helped or worked with UK forces being exposed.

John Healey told Matt Barbet on Breakfast: “I’m really deeply uncomfortable with the idea that a government applies for a super-injunction.

“If there are any [other] super-injunctions in place, I just have to tell you – I don’t know about them. I haven’t been read into them.

“The important thing here now is that we’ve closed the scheme.”

Listen to The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim every Wednesday

Mr Healey defended the government’s decision to keep secret a huge data leak that put thousands of lives at risk.

The defence secretary said when he first came into government, “we had to sort out a situation which we’d not had access to dealing with before”.

“That meant getting on top of the risks, the intelligence assessments, the policy complexities, the court papers and the range of Afghan relocation schemes the previous government had put in place,” he said.

“And it also meant taking decisions that no one takes lightly because lives may be at stake.”

Read more:
‘My family is finished’
Who will take the fall for the Afghan cover-up? – Listen

Mr Healey added that an independent review he launched says that it is now “highly unlikely that being a name on this data set that was lost three-and-a-half years ago increases the risk of being targeted”, which is why the breach can now be revealed.

Ministers have to account for applying for a super-injunction

Challenged on why it could not be revealed earlier if those on the list are no longer at risk, Mr Healey said the super-injunction “was a matter for the court”.

He said ministers needed to provide judges with a “fresh assessment” in order to have the super-injunction lifted.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Mr Healey also refused to criticise the former Conservative defence minister Ben Wallace for initially applying for the super-injunction, saying he did not know what information the minister had when he took the decision.

“But the important thing is they now have to account for those decisions,” he added.

The defence secretary was asked about who exactly is responsible for the massive data leak that is estimated to have cost millions of pounds.

Mr Healey responded that he is “not going to launch a witch hunt or point the finger at him”.

It follows former veterans minister Johnny Mercer writing publicly that he claims to know the person responsible.

Challenged on whether it is not a “witch hunt”, but accountability, Mr Healey hit back.

He said: “This goes much bigger than the mistaken actions of a single individual. My job as defence secretary, a year ago, was to get on top of the problems that I inherited.”

Mr Healey explained this is why he launched an independent review and the super-injunction ended, which means the leak and the subsequent scheme to bring those at risk to the UK can now face “proper scrutiny and accountability”.

Now details of the enormous accidental data breach by a British soldier that put thousands of Afghans’ lives at risk can be discussed publicly – Sam and Anne try to address some of the biggest questions on this episode.

They include:

Why did the government break the glass on using a superinjunction?

Has anyone been sacked?

Why did the Labour government keep the superinjunction in place for so long?

There’s still a bit of time to go over Rachel Reeves’ Mansion House speech. Did it reassure financiers and investors?

The rate of inflation has risen by more than expected on the back of fuel and food price pressures, according to official figures which have prompted accusations of an own goal for the chancellor.

The rate of inflation has risen by more than expected on the back of fuel and food price pressures, according to official figures which have prompted accusations of an own goal for the chancellor.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported a 3.6% level for the 12 months to June.

That was up from the 3.4% rate seen the previous month. Economists had expected no change.

Money latest: What do inflation figures mean for rate cut prospects?

ONS acting chief economist Richard Heys said: “Inflation ticked up in June driven mainly by motor fuel prices which fell only slightly, compared with a much larger decrease at this time last year.

“Food price inflation has increased for the third consecutive month to its highest annual rate since February of last year. However, it remains well below the peak seen in early 2023.”

A key driver of food inflation has been meat prices.

Money: Inflation jumps more than expected – as food and fuel prices add pressure

Chancellor Rachel Reeves considering ‘changes’ to ISAs – and says there’s too much focus on ‘risk’ in investing

Most important part of chancellor’s annual Mansion House speech was what wasn’t said

Beef, in particular, has shot up in cost – by more than 30% over the past year – according to Association of Independent Meat Suppliers data reported by FarmingUK.

High global demand alongside raised production costs have been blamed.

But Kris Hamer, director of insight at the British Retail Consortium, said: “While inflation has risen steadily over the last year, food inflation has seen a much more pronounced increase.

“Despite fierce competition between retailers, the ongoing impact of the last budget and poor harvests caused by the extreme weather have resulted in prices for consumers rising.”

It marked a clear claim that tax rises imposed on employers by Rachel Reeves from April have helped stoke inflation.

Balwinder Dhoot, director of sustainability and growth at the Food and Drink Federation, said: “The pressure on food and drink manufacturers continues to build. With many key ingredients like chocolate, butter, coffee, beef, and lamb, climbing in price – alongside high energy and labour expenses – these rising costs are gradually making their way into the prices shoppers pay at the tills.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said of the data: “I know working people are still struggling with the cost of living. That is why we have already taken action by increasing the national minimum wage for three million workers, rolling out free breakfast clubs in every primary school and extending the £3 bus far(e) cap.

“But there is more to do and I’m determined we deliver on our Plan for Change to put more money into people’s pockets.”

The wider ONS data is a timely reminder of the squeeze on living standards still being felt by many households – largely since the end of the COVID pandemic and subsequent energy-driven cost of living crisis.

Record rental costs alongside elevated borrowing costs – the latter a result of the Bank of England’s action to help keep a lid on inflation – have added to the burden on family budgets.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Most are still reeling from the effects of high energy bills.

The cost of gas and electricity is among the reasons why the pace of price growth for many goods and services remains above a level the Bank would ideally like to see.

Added to that is the toll placed on finances by wider hikes to bills. April saw those for water, council tax and many other essentials rise at an inflation-busting rate.

The inflation figures, along with employment data due tomorrow, are the last before the Bank of England is due to make its next interest rate decision on 7 August.

The vast majority of financial market participants, and many economists, expect a quarter point cut to 4%.

That forecast is largely based on the fact that wider economic data is suggesting a slowdown in both economic growth and the labour market – twin headaches for a chancellor gunning for growth and juggling hugely squeezed public finances.

Be the first to get Breaking News

Install the Sky News app for free

Professor Joe Nellis, economic adviser at the advisory firm MHA, said of the ONS data: “This is a reminder that while price rises have slowed from the highs of 2021-23, the battle against inflation is far from over and there is no return to normality yet – especially for many households who are still feeling the squeeze on essentials such as food, energy, and services.

“However, while the Bank of England is expected to take a cautious approach to interest rate policy, we still expect a cut in interest rates when the Monetary Policy Committee next votes on 7th August.

“Despite inflation at 3.6% remaining above the official 2% target, a softening labour market – slowing wage growth and decreasing job vacancies – means that the MPC will predict inflation to begin falling as we head into the new year, justifying the lowering of interest rates.”

For years, Trump and his MAGA base blamed the deep state for the cover-up of unreleased details about disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

They accused the Biden administration of suppressing the extent of Epstein’s paedophilia, predatory behaviour and his so-called “client list” – thought to contain names of the rich and famous who conspired with him in a child sex trafficking operation.

So far, so conspiracy theory. But now, Trump officials who previously said with certainty that the list exists are claiming it doesn’t.

The people who stood beside Trump as he decried the deep state aren’t happy. They want the files. Where have they gone?

As the Lionesses prepare for a sixth successive tournament quarter-final, based in plush Zurich surroundings, Janet Bagguley remembers how it all began for the team.

As the Lionesses prepare for a sixth successive tournament quarter-final, based in plush Zurich surroundings, Janet Bagguley remembers how it all began for the team.

It was a very different era.

She was a pioneer, lining up in 1972 when England finally played a women’s international – 100 years after the men’s team launched.

Now Lioness No 4 feels generations apart – and worlds apart – from the teenager who had to fund her own journey on international duty after a five-decade ban on women’s football was finally lifted in England.

“We didn’t have any help at all,” Bagguley told Sky News. “I’m sure our first game we wore a men’s football kit and the England badge was just stuck on, and then it would have been taken off after we returned it.

“We had no kit of our own, we bought our own football boots, everything we paid for ourselves or our parents did.”

And, already working at 16, with no holidays left, it relied on her boss clocking her in and out of work for three days.

Tribalism without toxicity – and other reasons why this Women’s Euros is so appealing

Women’s Euros: Concerns for player safety as tournament kicks off in Switzerland

So, on 18 November 1972, Bagguley could line up against Scotland on a frozen pitch, organised not directly by the Football Association but a Women’s FA.

“All the men’s matches that day had been called off because of the conditions, but we still played,” she said.

“I can remember walking out onto that pitch, feeling really, really proud, especially when they played the national anthem.”

England won 3-2. But it would take another two decades before the FA became fully on board with the women’s team.

Now the Lionesses are household names, with the FA’s investment developing a fully professional league and turning the national team into a force.

That peaked with the European Championship title won at Wembley in 2022 and reached the World Cup final a year later.

Semi-finals have been reached at every World Cup or Euros since 2015, and it’s the target when Sarina Wiegman’s side plays Sweden on Thursday in Zurich at Euro 2025.

Bagguley said: “Where it is today now, the facilities that they’ve all got, it’s amazing.

“And the current Lionesses are leaving a legacy now for all the younger ones coming through from the grassroots. It’s superb.

“Obviously things have come on in leaps and bounds haven’t they?”

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Bagguley is now a Royal Mail postwoman but has gained from the current generation’s surging status.

She has the type of sponsorship deal unimaginable in 1972, through KIND Snacks, collecting letters of support to deliver to the players.

“They’re professionals now,” she said. “It was really hard work. We had snarky remarks thrown at us about you should be at home doing your cooking and cleaning and things like that.”

But now?

“It’s fantastic,” she said. “You hear the kids all shouting, I’ll be Toone, I’m going to be Bronze, Williamson. They’re all such household names now.”

The trial of a dentist accused of murdering his wife by poisoning her protein shakes has begun in the US state of Colorado.

The trial of a dentist accused of murdering his wife by poisoning her protein shakes has begun in the US state of Colorado.

James Craig denies using cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, an ingredient in over-the-counter eye drops, to kill Angela Craig in a suburb of Denver.

During the trial’s opening statements on Tuesday, prosecutors claimed the 47-year-old was having an affair with another dentist, had financial difficulties and may have been motivated by the payout from his wife’s life insurance.

Assistant District Attorney Ryan Brackley told the jury at Arapahoe District Court that the 43-year-old victim – who had six children with her husband – had been suffering worsening symptoms including dizziness, vomiting and fainting.

She died in March 2023 during her third trip to the hospital that month.

Mr Brackley accused Craig of poisoning her protein shakes – then giving his wife a final dose of poison while she was in hospital, and said: “He went in that [hospital] room to murder her, to deliberately and intentionally end her life with a fatal dose of cyanide … She spends the next three days dying.”

Craig, who shook his head at times during the prosecution’s opening statement, has pleaded not guilty to several charges, including first-degree murder, solicitation to commit murder and solicitation to commit perjury.

Prosecutors said Craig had tried to make it appear his wife of 23 years had killed herself. His internet history showed he had searched for “how to make a murder look like a heart attack” and “is arsenic detectable in an autopsy”.

In an argument, captured on home surveillance video, his wife also accused him of suggesting to hospital staff that she was suicidal.

After Craig’s arrest in 2023, prosecutors alleged that he had offered a fellow prison inmate $20,000 (£14,993) to kill the case’s lead investigator and offered someone else $20,000 to find people to falsely testify that Angela Craig planned to die by suicide.

Craig’s attorney, Ashley Whitham, told the jury to consider the credibility of those witnesses, calling some “jailhouse snitches”.

Ms Whitham argued that the evidence didn’t show that he poisoned her, instead seeming to suggest she may have taken her own life.

She described Angela Craig as “broken”, partly by Craig’s infidelity and her desire to stay married, since they were part of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints.

Hospital staff had said Craig had been caring and “doting” while Angela Craig was in the hospital, said Whitham.

Listen to The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim every Wednesday

The defence argued prosecutors had overdramatised Craig’s financial problems and dismissed the prosecution’s suggestion that Craig was motivated to kill because of an affair he was having with a fellow dentist from Texas.

“That’s simply not the case,” Whitham said, adding that Craig had many affairs over the years that his wife knew about. “He was candid with Angela that he had been cheating.”

The trial continues.

The Duke of Sussex has visited Angola to support a landmine clearing charity, repeating a famous trip his mother made in 1997.

Prince Harry met the Angolan President Joao Lourenco yesterday at the start of his trip, according to a statement from The Halo Trust, which helps clear landmines from old war zones.

Princess Diana visited the country in January 1997, supporting the same charity, seven months before she was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Diana famously wore protective equipment and walked through a cleared path in an active minefield in Huambo, during a break in fighting in the African country’s long civil war.

Her attention to the plight of Angola – including civilians injured by landmines – helped secure a treaty banning the munitions.

Harry has followed his mother’s footsteps by raising awareness of HALO’s work.

During a previous trip in 2019, he said Angola’s continued problem with landmines would likely have been solved if his mother had lived.

He also met landmine survivor Sandra Tigica – 22 years after his mother Princess Diana was pictured with the then 13-year-old, who lost a leg.

James Cowan, chief executive of The Halo Trust, said in a statement that he and Harry met Angola’s president to discuss continued demining efforts.

“We thanked him for his extraordinary dedication to and investment in the vision of a mine-free country, and he expressed his intention to continue to support our work with a further significant contract for the next three years,” he said.

The charity estimates that around 80,000 Angolans have been killed or injured by landmines during and after the 27-year civil war, although there are no exact figures.

The organisation says just over 1,000 minefields, covering an estimated 26 sq miles (67 sq km) still needed to be cleared at the end of 2024. Angola had set a goal to be landmine-free by 2025.

HM Revenue and Customs does not know how many billionaires pay tax in the UK, according to a new report by MPs.

HM Revenue and Customs does not know how many billionaires pay tax in the UK, according to a new report by MPs.

The Public Accounts Committee says this is despite the fact only a small number of people have this status – and the significant sums of money involved.

HMRC has been told it “can and must” do more to understand how much the very wealthiest in society contribute to the public purse, as “there is a lot of money being left on the table”.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Artificial intelligence and The Sunday Times Rich List were identified as two ways of getting a clearer picture.

The taxman is facing calls to reveal how it plans to increase contributions from billionaires both domestically and offshore, amid a squeeze in the public finances.

MPs added: “There is much public interest in the amount of tax the wealthy pay. People need to know everyone pays their fair share.”

The report pointed to the US, where the Internal Revenue Service links its data to the Forbes 400 list of rich Americans.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves considering ‘changes’ to ISAs – and says there’s too much focus on ‘risk’ in investing

Most important part of chancellor’s annual Mansion House speech was what wasn’t said

Trump to ‘refine trade deal’ with UK during Scotland trip

PAC member Lloyd Hatton added: “This report is not concerned with political debate around the redistribution of wealth.

“Our committee’s role is to help HMRC do its job properly, ensuring wealthy people pay the correct tax.

“While HMRC does deserve some great credit for securing billions more in the tax take from the wealthiest in recent years, there is still a very long way to go before we can reach a true accounting of what is owed.”

Mr Hatton added that the committee was “disappointed” that HMRC could not offer any insights into the tax arrangements of billionaires from its own data – as “any single one of these individuals’ contributions could make a significant difference to the overall picture”.

At present, about 1,000 people within HMRC are focused on the tax affairs of the UK’s wealthiest, but funding has been secured to increase this headcount by 400 – with a view to “increasing prosecutions of those who evade tax”.

A spokesperson added: “The government is determined to make sure everyone pays the tax they owe.

“Extra resources were announced in the recent spending review which allows us to significantly step up our work on closing the tax gap among the wealthiest.”
