The House Oversight Committee has been carrying out a probe into the late financier, with several prominent figures – including Bill and Hillary Clinton – among those to have given evidence so far.

A spokesperson for Mr Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, said he “welcomes the opportunity” to face questions.

“While he never witnessed or participated in any of Epstein’s illegal conduct, he is looking forward to answering all the committee’s questions to support their important work,” they said in a statement.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 June.

There have been growing calls for high-profile individuals named in the Epstein files to testify about their ties to him and any knowledge of his crimes. Being named in the files does not imply wrongdoing.

The millions of documents released by the US justice department in recent months have included email exchanges between Epstein and Mr Gates, photos of whom have also featured.

Mr Gates maintains that his relationship and repeated meetings with Epstein were confined to philanthropy-related discussions and that it was a mistake for him to meet Epstein.

He told Australia’s 9News earlier this year: “Every minute I spent with him, I regret.”

Also set to appear before the committee in the coming months is Donald Trump’s former attorney general Pam Bondi, who was sacked last week.

The president had reportedly grown frustrated over her handling of the Epstein files. The move to summon her to give evidence was spearheaded by a Republican, Nancy Mace, who said “the American people want answers”.

Epstein, a wealthy and well-connected financier, was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and was found dead in his prison cell in August that year.

His ties to some of the world’s most high-profile figures have come under heightened scrutiny after Mr Trump signed legislation passed by Congress last November requiring the justice department to release documents relating to its investigations into Epstein.

But maternity leave cannot be delayed in the UK, meaning many mothers have to choose between spending time with their newborn and receiving treatment.

The longest-serving health secretary in British history is backing calls to change the law so that mothers diagnosed with cancer would be able to delay maternity leave for up to a year after birth, calling the move a “no-brainer”.

Sir Jeremy, who received a cancer diagnosis himself, said it is “one of the most terrifying things that can happen to you”, and described how “you feel like there’s a guillotine hanging over your head and you just don’t know”.

His cancer was caught early, but the disease has taken both of his parents and his brother.

Addressing the calls to change maternity leave, he warned ministers that “the longer you wait, the more people will suffer”.

Speaking to Sky News, Sir Jeremy added that such a change would face “zero opposition from any other parties in the House” if it was introduced as a draft law by the government, or as a private member’s bill.

The campaign has received cross-party support, being championed by a key aide to the prime minister, as well as by other Labour MPs and members of the Liberal Democrats.

There have been limited studies into the number of women who receive a cancer diagnosis during or in the immediate months after pregnancy.

But Macmillan Cancer Support says what research there is suggests around one in every 1,000 pregnancies result in the mother discovering they have cancer – and that this number is rising.

The charity also backs up figures from Mummy’s Star that on average, “at least two women every day” are diagnosed with cancer while pregnant, or shortly after birth.

A report published in the US-based Journal of Global Oncology in 2018 also found a slightly higher rate, of around one diagnosis per 800 pregnancies.

The move is being led by Mummy’s Star founder Pete Wallroth, whose own wife, Mair, was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant in June 2012. Two months later, she gave birth to her second child – but the cancer spread and she died that December.

He told Sky News that Mair’s cancer diagnosis “really impacted her and her early days as a mum for the second time”.

“We can’t be penalising people unfairly just because they got a cancer diagnosis around their pregnancy,” he said.

Ashleigh Eccles, who was diagnosed with cancer shortly after giving birth in 2023, said she felt “an immense amount of grief” at losing her entire maternity leave to cancer treatment. She routinely had to leave her newborn with her parents while she went for chemotherapy.

“I really felt like I had missed out on this magical time to bond with my baby,” she said.

Ms Eccles was also “totally surprised” to learn that maternity leave couldn’t be delayed, and that she was “never going to get that time back”.

Similarly, Beth Dedman was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma shortly after giving birth to her first child in 2024.

She said her employers were “brilliant” about the situation – but “they didn’t know what to do”.

“It all seemed like it was wrong, that something was missing,” she said. “I was thinking ‘that can’t be right’. Everybody that I came across didn’t really know how to tell me that [delaying maternity leave] wasn’t even an option.”

Mr Wallroth believes that the current situation means “everybody loses”, and pushes women out of their jobs, as they often don’t return full-time, having spent precious few moments with their newborn. He said changing the rules on maternity leave would involve a short-term cost, but a long-term saving.

“If you’re able to better support that process, if you’re able to offer a deferment, they’re far more likely to stay in that job in the long-term,” he said.

“I know what the Treasury will say,” said Sir Jeremy, who served as the chancellor for almost two years, under Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

He continued: “They’ll say, ‘look, why make an exception for cancer? What about other illnesses that people could get as well?’ The truth is that the law is always a bit messy, but in a compassionate society, we need to make some room for exceptions – and this is one that just seems to be very sensible.”

Labour MP Jon Pearce, who is a parliamentary private secretary for Sir Keir Starmer, raised the issue with ministers after hosting some of the campaigners in parliament last month.

“You could not fail to be moved by the stories of mothers whose maternity leave was spent undergoing treatment for cancer,” he told Sky News. “I cannot imagine what it must be like for a mum excited about bonding with their new baby to have their lives turned upside down.”

Changing the law “would benefit around 700 mums each year”, he added.

Ireland has already taken the decision to allow maternity leave to be delayed in certain circumstances, introducing the change in 2024.

Referring to this, Sir Jeremy said: “If you can point to a country where it’s happened, and it hasn’t caused the skies to fall in, then that’s a pretty good indication it’s a sensible thing to do.

“It’s a real shame to hang around on something like this that really would make life better for lots of people.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Business and Trade said: “Receiving news of a cancer diagnosis is devastating for individuals and families at any time, especially for mothers on maternity leave who should be spending that precious time bonding with their newborn baby.

“Our National Cancer Plan sets out how we will support people, including pregnant and postnatal women with cancer, and our parental leave review is exploring how we can better support working families so that parents can spend time doing what matters most – caring for their baby.”

Crucially, Mr Trump has said the US would hit civilian infrastructure, something that is widely considered a war crime under international law.

The Geneva Convention, which the UK is a signatory to, but the US is not, states, “Civilian objects shall not be the object of attack or of reprisals”.

However, the US president said in a news conference on Monday that “the entire country” could be taken out in “one night, and that night might be tomorrow”.

He added: “We’re giving them till tomorrow, 8pm EST (1am UK time), and after that, they’re going to have no bridges, they’re going to have no power plants. Stone ages.”

When asked, Mr Trump said he was “not at all” concerned that such an act could be classified as a war crime, before adding, “I hope I don’t have to do it”.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, the president went further, saying: “A whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

The possibility of targeting civilian infrastructure has been condemned by European leaders, including EU Council president Antonio Costa.

On Monday, Mr Costa wrote that “Any targeting of civilian infrastructure, namely energy facilities, is illegal and unacceptable”.

The possibility of concerted US strikes against civilian infrastructure marks a significant departure from Washington’s previous stance on war crimes and what constitutes them.

Four years ago, it was the US that was accusing Russia of war crimes over the targeting of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, with president Joe Biden calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal”.

Despite Russia not being a signatory to the Geneva Conventions, alleged Russian actions in Ukraine still led to the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing an arrest warrant for Mr Putin.

The Kremlin said at the time that Russia, which does not recognise the ICC, found the questions raised by the court “outrageous and unacceptable”.

Mr Costa has said that the same principle of not targeting civilian infrastructure “applied everywhere,” in the same way that it “applies to Russia’s war in Ukraine”.

The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres, has openly raised the idea that such an attack, by any party, could be counted as war crimes.

In an interview with Politico in late March, Mr Guterres said: “If there are attacks either on Iran or from Iran on energy infrastructure, I think that there are reasonable grounds to think that they might constitute a war crime.”

Previous power threats

Iran, Israel and the US have all been attacking energy infrastructure since the outbreak of the current conflict.

Responding to those attacks in March, Heba Morayef, Amnesty International’s regional director, said: “There is a substantial risk such attacks would violate international humanitarian law and, in some cases, could amount to war crimes”.

However, a coordinated campaign targeting power plants, as the US has threatened, would be a significant escalation.

This is not the first time that Mr Trump has threatened to hit Iranian power plants.

On 22 March, the president wrote on Truth Social that the US would “hit and obliterate” Iranian power plants if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

Iran responded by saying it would attack crucial infrastructure across the Gulf in response to any US attack, including desalination plants.

On Sunday, Kuwait accused Iran of launching an attack which put a water desalination station out of service – such moves may also pass the threshold of being deemed a war crime.

A new voting system and an electorate hungry for change means for the first time in Wales, polls suggest voters no longer want Labour in power.

But a new and clear pattern is emerging in the polls. Once dominant, Labour is now fighting for third with the Greens, while Plaid Cymru and Reform UK compete for first place.

The most recent ITV YouGov poll speaks to this trend: Plaid Cymru is in first place with 33% – securing an estimated 43 seats, six short of a majority. Reform UK follows on 27%, with Welsh Labour down to 13%.

If polling is accurate, Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth could be Wales’s first non-Labour First Minister. The Welsh Labour red rose superseded by the Plaid Cymru daffodil.

But the polls do not indicate an overall majority for Plaid Cymru. No party has ever secured one in Cardiff Bay since devolution, and the new voting system makes that outcome even less likely this time.

Mr ap Iorwerth previously told Sky News he would run a minority government. Plaid Cymru sources told Sky News the party has sought advice from the SNP after they took over government from Scottish Labour in 2007.

Unless Plaid secures a majority, which is unlikely, the party will need to rely on support from opposition parties to get its ambitions into law.

Could the Green Party be Plaid Cymru’s secret weapon? The polls indicate that.

The recent Green bounce, fuelled by Zack Polanski, means the party, led by Anthony Slaughter in Wales, could be on track for 10 seats in the Senedd.

Mr Slaughter told Sky News “the polls suggest we will hold the balance of power in the Senedd after the election”.

If that happens, it would be a big moment, since the Greens have never had a seat in the Welsh Parliament before. The surge of the Greens could provide a lifeline to Plaid Cymru, which wants to distance itself from Labour and previous co-operation agreements under Labour-led minority governments in Cardiff.

There’s common ground between the Greens and Plaid. They are both left leaning, pro EU, pro Welsh independence, and both have by-election wins. Plaid in Caerphilly, the Greens in Gorton and Denton – both chipping away at Labour and claiming victory from Labour over Reform.

But sticking points could be around Plaid’s decision to abandon its 2035 net zero pledges, which could be a red line for the Greens, who are also seeking advice from Scottish counterparts.

As one Green Wales Party source put it: “When the SNP started watering things down, the Scottish Greens walked away from government. It’s not about getting a seat at the table for us, it’s about delivering real change.”

Eluned Morgan, the sixth consecutive Labour First Minister of Wales, told Sky News she does not accept they are going to lose in May.

However, recent YouGov polling suggests the Baroness may not even secure a seat at next month’s election.

Despite the first minister’s defiance, some within Labour’s ranks are far less optimistic than their leader.

One party that is optimistic is Reform UK, led in Wales by Dan Thomas. Reform is confident they can win the popular vote in May, pledging to scrap the controversial default 20mph limit in urban areas and focusing on immigration.

Reform is clearly cutting through in Wales. Recent polls put Reform on 27% with about 30 seats, 19 short of a majority.

With the Conservatives projected to win just one seat and other parties ruling out a coalition, Mr Thomas’s path to first minister based on polling looks tricky.

The party, however, appears poised to replace the Conservatives as the official opposition, a development likely to please them as Nigel Farage has signalled his ambition for Reform UK to “put an end” to the Tories.

Dr Jac Larner of the Wales Governance Centre told Sky News the new voting system makes things harder for mid-sized parties.

He said: “Each of the 16 constituencies returns six members, allocated in successive rounds – meaning the final seats in each constituency are typically decided by very small margins. That makes seat projections genuinely uncertain, especially for mid-sized parties whose fortunes depend on winning those last, tightest places.

“A swing of just a couple of percentage points can trigger a cascade of gains or losses across the country.”

He added: “For Labour and the Conservatives, that uncertainty cuts particularly sharply: the difference between a bad night and a truly catastrophic one may come down to no more than two or three points in vote share.”

With a new voting system being used in Wales for the first time, everything is still up for grabs on 7 May.

But if recent polling is anything to go by, one thing seems inevitable: the era of two-party dominance in Wales looks to be ending, and its aftershocks could soon ripple down the M4.

Caribbean Airlines allows pregnant passengers to fly without medical clearance until the end of their 32nd week, and prohibits travel after the 35th week.

Brad Bernstein, an immigration lawyer, says the birth creates some pretty interesting legal questions.

In a video on his YouTube page, he explained: “Now the big question is… is that baby a US citizen?

“Here’s the answer – depends on one thing: where exactly that plane was in the sky at the moment of birth.

“If the baby was born in US airspace, then under the 14th Amendment and State Department regulations, that child is automatically a US citizen.

“But if the baby was born even a few minutes earlier outside of the United States airspace, not a US citizen.”

“Here we go, ready or not,” Ms Guthrie said as the show opened. “Let’s do the news.”

After running through a series of news headlines, Ms Guthrie said, “we are so glad that you started our week with us and it’s good to be home”.

Her co-host, Craig Melvin said, “it’s good to have you back at home”.

She fought back tears when one fan was seen with a “Welcome home Savannah” shirt, and grabbed hold of colleague Jenna Bush Hager’s arm, thanking people for their support.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her Arizona home on 31 January and was reported missing the following day.

“Perhaps this is too dark a message to share on Easter morning, but I have long believed that we miss out on fully celebrating resurrection if we do not acknowledge the feelings of loss, pain and, yes, death,” she said.

“It is the darkness that makes this morning’s light so magnificent, so blindingly beautiful.”

In her closing message, she said: “I see a bright vision of the day when heaven and Earth pass away because they are one, on Earth as it is in heaven.

“When we celebrate today, this is what we celebrate, and I celebrate, too. I still believe. And so I say with conviction, ‘Happy Easter.'”

He told FOX 10 that bees in Arizona are highly aggressive – and it is not uncommon for someone to be stung hundreds of times in a single incident.

“It’s always about protecting the queen bee, protecting the hive,” he said. “And it sends signals that the other bees come over and kind of attack you.”

An unusually warm winter has caused bee activity to rise in Arizona, and this is the latest in a long line of incidents.

Just last week, five people were stung – with one taken to hospital – after a swarm disrupted a women’s lacrosse game at a university campus in Tempe.

The president’s plea for the money was included in a proposed budget plan released by the ​White House to fund the US federal government ‌for the 2027 financial year.

Such spending requests are normally seen as suggestions by Congress.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons would use the investment to cover the ​first-year costs of rebuilding Alcatraz into “a state-of-the-art ⁠secure prison facility”, the plan said.

The jail, on an island in San Francisco Bay in northern California, closed in 1963, and was opened to the public in 1973 as part of the US National Park Service.

Last May, Mr Trump said in a social media post that he had told the bureau, along with the US Department of ‌Justice and other agencies to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz, to house America’s most ruthless and violent offenders”.

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, which opened in 1934, had been billed as the most ⁠secure prison in the US, given the island location, frigid ​waters and strong currents.

Authorities said escape was impossible, but in the 29 years it was open, 36 men made 14 separate attempts, according to the FBI.

No successful escapes ​were ever officially recorded, though five prisoners are ​listed as “missing and presumed drowned”.

The story of three of those inmates was turned into the highly successful 1979 film, Escape From Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood.

Alcatraz Island was also the setting for the 1996 movie, The Rock, starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage.
