Mr Duterte, 79, was arrested for alleged crimes against humanity on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague, early on Tuesday.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said police detained Mr Duterte when he returned from a trip to Hong Kong and sent him to the ICC.

In 2021, the ICC began investigating mass killings linked to his so-called “war on drugs” during his time as mayor of the southern Philippine city of Davao and later as president.

Human rights groups have said up to 30,000 died as part of the crackdown while he was president from 2016 to 2022, while national police reports estimate more than 6,000 were killed.

In its warrant, ICC judges said there were “reasonable grounds to believe that [Mr] Duterte is individually responsible for the crime against humanity of murder”.
