Brazilian authorities have said they are “visiting locations to find and clarify what happened” to missing British journalist Charlotte Peet.

The 32-year-old has not contacted family or friends in more than 10 days.

Police in Brazil have sent the case to authorities in Sao Paulo, where she last made contact on 8 February. She had told a friend she was in the city but was planning to visit Rio de Janeiro and had asked about accommodation there.

Several days later, Ms Peet’s family contacted the friend to say they had lost contact, with her mother then reporting the journalist missing.

Ms Peet’s father told Sky News she was traced to Gatwick Airport and was found to have boarded a plane to Sao Paulo before the trail went cold.

“I’m very concerned but I just don’t know what’s going on, we’re just trying to pick up the pieces really,” Derek Peet said.

The Peet family has provided information about her flight to Brazil and a photo of her passport to help with the search.

Ms Peet had worked as a freelance foreign correspondent in Brazil for almost two years and returned to the country in November.

Her LinkedIn profile says she has worked for the broadcaster Al Jazeera and The Times newspaper.

The ACIE, the association of foreign press correspondents in Brazil, has issued a statement expressing concern about her disappearance, and sympathy for her family and friends.
