Ukrainian nationals Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Petro Pochynok, 35, along with Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, appeared at the Old Bailey in London by video-link from Belmarsh prison in connection with the fires.

Two of the blazes took place in Kentish Town, north London – one in the early hours of 12 May at the house where Sir Keir lived before he became prime minister and moved into Downing Street.

A Toyota RAV4, which Sir Keir had previously sold, was set alight in the same street four days earlier on 8 May.

There was another blaze at the front door of a house converted into flats in Islington, also linked to the prime minister, on 11 May.

Lavrynovych, of Lewisham, southeast London, and Pochynok, from Islington, north London, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life between April 1 and May 13.

The charge alleges that the defendants “together with others” conspired to damage by fire property “belonging to another and intending to endanger the life of another or being reckless as to the life of another would thereby be endangered”.

Carpiuc, from Romford, east London, was not asked to enter his plea to the same charge.

The judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, remanded them in custody ahead of the next hearing on 28 November, with a trial date set for 27 April next year.
