Police in the city of Orebro, around 125 miles (200km) west of the capital, Stockholm, have opened an attempted murder investigation after what they said was probably a gang-related incident and are searching for those responsible.

Officers said in a statement: “Based on the current situation regarding the shooting in Orebro, the incident is believed to be linked to the criminal network environment.”

Both victims were taken to hospital, a police spokesperson said, without giving details on the extent of their injuries.

Many emergency services were at the scene, and police told people to stay away.

Investigators said the incident could be the latest in a wave of gang-related violence that has plagued Sweden for more than a decade.

Criminal gangs often recruit teenagers in socially disadvantaged immigrant neighbourhoods to attack rivals.

Local TV news channel TV4 said there has been tension between two gangs in Orebro recently.

Police were called at around 1.45pm, local time, during Friday prayers, Swedish news outlet Dagens Nyheter said.

It quoted a statement from the mosque that said it was “not a target”.

Orebro saw Sweden’s deadliest gun attack when 10 students and teachers were killed when a former student opened fire at the Campus Risbergska school in February.

The perpetrator also took his own life in an outrage unrelated to gang violence, according to police who found no clear motive in the case.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it the worst shooting in the country’s history.

The musician’s murder has been linked to a local gangland conflict.
