Emma Raducanu has been knocked out of Wimbledon after losing to top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.

The British number one went toe-to-toe at times with Sabalenka and put in arguably her best performance in years, with the first set decided on a tie-break.

But the 22-year-old eventually lost to the Belarusian player who won in straight sets 7-6 6-4 after exactly two hours under the roof on Centre Court.

The world number one has now set up a fourth-round clash with Belgium’s Elise Mertens.

Raducanu’s defeat means there is only one Briton left in the women’s singles – Sonay Kartal.

Kartal plays Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round four.

In the men’s singles, Cameron Norrie is the only Briton left in the draw and he will face Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry in the last 16.

In the Raducanu match, the first set took 74 minutes, with the British star saving seven set points and creating one of her own, while she led 4-1 in the second.

Raducanu was one point away from taking a 5-1 lead, and it seemed she might pull off one of the most improbable wins against an opponent who has contested the last three Grand Slam finals.

But it was not meant to be as Sabalenka recovered to win the last five games and extinguish Raducanu’s hopes of reaching the fourth round for a third time.

Sabalenka said of her opponent: “She played such incredible tennis and she pushed me really hard to get this win. I fight for every point like crazy.

“I’m super happy to see her healthy and back on track. I’m pretty sure that she will be back in the top 10 soon.

“What an atmosphere, my ears are still hurting. I was telling myself, just pretend they’re cheering for you, and I was having goosebumps.”
