Forecasters have issued more snow and ice warnings across the UK, as the freezing conditions cause travel disruptions.

Yellow alerts for snow and ice remained in place for the north of Scotland, much of Wales, Northern Ireland and parts of England, the Met Office said.

Strong northerly winds have brought a wave of Arctic air to Britain, which has caused temperatures to plummet to below zero.

Heavy snowfall has already blanketed parts of Scotland, with 20cm falling in the north and 37cm at Tomintoul, as well as up to 5cm in parts of England and Wales.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to remain in the low single figures across Britain on Saturday, and below freezing in parts of northern Scotland.

Temperatures of nearly -6C were recorded at Loch Ness on Friday night, and could fall to -10C to -17C in parts of northern Scotland overnight on Saturday, forecasters said.

ScotRail announced several train cancellations in the north of Scotland on Saturday, including in Wick and Inverness, while a number of roads in the region were closed.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said the “spine” of the country would see winter sunshine on Saturday, though Northern Ireland, Scotland and western parts of Wales would face snow and sleet.

“It remains very cold across the whole of the UK, Arctic air in place… northerly airflow right across the UK bringing that cold air to all of us, and icy stretches, snow in place too,” he said.

“It will remain so through the rest of the weekend and into the beginning of next week, with temperatures well below average.”

Warnings to remain until at least Monday

The Met Office said that heavy snowfalls could see some rural communities cut off, with a risk of power cuts in some areas.

The yellow warnings remain in place for England’s southwest, including Cornwall, up to the northwest, including Manchester and Blackpool, until 12pm on Monday before conditions ease on Tuesday, the Met Office said.

Much of Wales will fall under an ice warning on Saturday, with a yellow snow and ice warning in place from Sunday until 11am on Tuesday.

The Met Office warned Britons to expect travel disruptions and to be cautious of an increased risk of injury from falls on icy surfaces.
