Owner Dawn French also says one ewe was also “massacred by dogs” in a field in East Hatley. A fifth alpaca was shot in the face, but survived the attack.

Cambridgeshire Police has appealed for help to trace those behind the shooting, which happened between 6pm on Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday off Main Street.

In a post on Facebook, Ms French said “what an absolutely horrific day” as she detailed the scale of the attack.

“Four of our lovely alpacas shot in the head and killed, one ewe massacred by dogs, another alpaca wounded and one alpaca and ewe terrified and so skittish.

“Police are taking it very seriously with guns involved… what on earth next?” she wrote.

Sergeant Tom Nuttall said: “This was a highly distressing crime that has caused death and serious injury to defenceless animals.

“I would encourage anyone who knows anything about this offence to get in touch as soon as possible.”
