Metropolitan Police officers were called to High Street, South Norwood, at 1.27am on Sunday.

After gaining entry to the property, officers encountered a 45-year-old man who was “very agitated and was actively resisting against officers”.

He was experiencing a medical emergency and was restrained while paramedics were called.

He was then transported to an ambulance but became seriously unwell.

He later died in hospital.

His next of kin have been informed.

“The IOPC is conducting an investigation to provide that independent scrutiny.”

Commander Brittain also acknowledged the impact incidents like this can have on police officers.
