Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both aged 32, were last spotted on CCTV in the city’s Market Street at Victoria Bridge at about 2.12am on Tuesday 7 January.

The women were seen crossing the bridge and turning right on to a footpath next to the River Dee in the direction of Aberdeen Boat Club.

The siblings’ disappearance sparked a major Police Scotland operation, with the force’s extensive searches of the River Dee coming to an end three weeks later.

On the morning of Friday 31 January, a woman’s body was spotted and subsequently recovered from the water near to Queen Elizabeth Bridge.

At the time Police Scotland said formal identification was yet to take place, but the family of Henrietta had been informed.

At around 9.05pm that night, a second woman’s body was found in an area of the river near to Victoria Bridge.

Again, formal identification was yet to take place, but the family of Eliza were informed.

Police Scotland has now confirmed the bodies were those of the sisters.

Superintendent David Howieson said: “The two bodies recovered from the River Dee on Friday 31 January 2025 have now been formally identified as Henrietta and Eliza Huszti who were reported missing on Tuesday 7 January 2025.

“Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the exact cause of death however there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.”

Investigating officers had previously said there had been “no evidence” of the women leaving the immediate area and there had been nothing to suggest “suspicious circumstances or criminality”.

The police revealed that the sisters – who are part of a set of triplets and originally from Hungary – visited the bridge where they were last seen about 12 hours before they disappeared.

They also sent a text message to their landlady on the morning they vanished, indicating they would not be returning to the flat.

In a statement released via Police Scotland at the time the women went missing, their family said: “All we want is for them to be found.”
